10 Easy Steps to a Quick Makeup
Growing up, makeup was one thing many people expected me to know but I was never any good at it. They expected me to be good at it because:
- I have two sisters who are great at it.
- I enjoyed wearing it.
- I liked watching my sister do it for us and eventually clients.
But even though I watched her do it almost every day, I got no better at it. She even tried teaching me but I guess it was one of those things I had to not just develop an interest in wearing but also had to develop a separate interest in learning. Anyways, somewhere along the line I grew up and learnt the basics, the essentials and a few tricks and in this article, I will be sharing them with you.
Makeup is an Industry that is forever changing but a few basics have stuck around through time. Here are a few of them you will need in no particular order:
Yeah, I know I said they are just a few but I will explain which one you can skip or is a must-have.
Now to My Most-coveted Makeup Tricks
Cleanser
This is an important part of skincare and if you don’t have it as a part of your routine, I recommend you add it. A cleanser doesn’t just help you clean dirt, it removes excess oil, and dead skin layer, it hydrates your skin and refreshes it. A cleanser can be in many forms; it could be a facial mask, cleansing lotion, foam cleanser or even micellar water. You might want to do this at least twice daily or before and after wearing makeup. However, you might skip this process if you have just washed your face.
Primer
The one purpose of a primer is to prepare your face, serve as a base for other products and help them stay put. It’s also a great way to hide pores, fine lines or wrinkles that may pop up after you apply your foundation. Unlike other makeup products, you don’t have to find your colour.
However, you still have to find something that works for your skin type and knowing your skin type is the key to acing this step. You shouldn’t skip this process.
Foundation
Let’s say you wanted to build a house, you wouldn’t build one without first making a foundation, right? It’s the same for makeup; the foundation is the base you put all other products on. The only products that go under the foundation are the cleanser, moisturizer and primer, the rest go over it.
It can be in liquid, powder or cream form and it could be full coverage or not, matte or not, and Longwear or not. It’s advisable you read the bottle before you buy. You also have to make sure you get your skin colour or a colour that makes your complexion uniform to get that flawless and dewy finish we all want.
Concealer
This is the next step after applying your foundation and the good news is you don’t have to put it all over your face so you save products here. You only have to apply on parts that you think require more coverage, like your laugh lines, blemishes, dark circles, wrinkles and those stubborn pores.
Concealer also helps stop your skin from looking cakey, kindly blend with a brush or beauty blender.
Blush, Bronzer and Highlighter
After applying your concealer, you could add blush to give your cheeks that pop of colour or to appear rosy. You could also give your makeup that glowing finish with a choice highlighter or try your hand at contouring with a bronzer. I usually skip this process because; I have oily skin and I am no good at contouring so no need to put my sister to shame.
Eyebrows
I know this is the tricky part, and it is for me too but while your eyebrows don’t have to look like twins, they should at least look like they are related. Your eyebrows are supposed to complement the rest of your look; how they look can go a long way in determining what your final look will look like.
If you can’t define your brows with a pencil, I would recommend trying a brow gel or an eyebrow pen. Whether you do this process before the foundation or after the previous step depends on what works for you.
Eyeshadow, Eyeliner and Mascara
If you like to play with colors as much as I do, this process is a great place for your fantasies. I would recommend getting an eyeshadow palette that strikes a balance between light shades and black shades. After that, you apply your eyeliner, if you are wearing foundation, eyeliner is a must-wear for you.
After doing that, you can now put on your mascara, I would recommend a 9XL mascara for more volume if you don’t want to wear faux lashes.
Powder
This can be in a pressed form, compact or loose form and like foundation, concealer, bronzer and highlighter, getting a colour that suits your skin tone is very important. If you have oily skin, it is very important to get a powder that is for oily skin so your makeup doesn’t end up looking cakey.
If you have dry skin, it is also important to get the powder appropriate for your skin type and dab on gently with your brush.
Lips
This is one of the final steps in your daily makeup routine. I usually would go for some tinted gloss but if you are a lover of lipsticks and lip stains, you can go with that and just apply some clear gloss over it. I would however recommend lining your lips first.
Setting Spray
This can be applied after all other steps as a final step or after each step to make them stay longer. The purpose of a setting spray is to help your makeup stay on all day and look better as your day goes on. I usually use mine after each step, especially the primer, foundation and concealer.
It has been fun sharing my tricks with you, I look forward to sharing more but before I go, there are two tools you can’t do without.
Makeup Brushes
This is my favourite tool, they come in all sizes and shapes and are each specifically made for what they do. I currently use Real techniques brushes and Maange and I am loving the way they blend everything into my skin. I have included links for them.
Beauty Blenders
This usually will be shaped like an egg or waterdrop and its primary purpose is to help all the products you have applied blend into your skin giving you a natural finish.
With this, we have come to the end, till our next meeting, stay shamelessly beautiful.
