5 Christmas Movies You Should See This Christmas

Every year, every single day of the last 31 days of the year, cable networks put on shows and movies featuring the holiday spirit, a Christmas miracle, and the snow that comes with Christmas.

This year I have made up my mind that I won’t be watching cheesy cliche romances of a New York writer retreating to a small town in need of the next big story and eventually falling in love.

No, this year, I would be engaging my inner child and returning to the classic holiday movies that taught us when we were kids the importance of Christmas; as a season to spread love and cheer.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas

This classic film blew my mind and reminded me that the naivety/ innocence of a child might just be what grownups need.

On the outskirts of the town of Whoville lives a grinch who hides away from the rest of the population. Due to bad childhood memories about Christmas, he decides to steal Christmas. He succeeds in stealing all of the cheer, decorations, and gifts but his heart is warmed by a little girl and he is amazed at how the people of Whoville can still celebrate the season without the gifts.

He is eventually invited back to town and realizes the true meaning of Christmas.

Last Christmas

This is the story of a young lady who has a strained relationship with her mother, boss, and life itself. Last Christmas, she was dying but this Christmas she meets a young man who turns her life around and teaches her to love again and spread love, helps her mend her outlook on life only for her to one day realize she has been the only one who has been able to see him all these time.

The pitying and concerned looks she got from strangers on their many adventures suddenly make sense to her now and she realizes that she was given his heart when he died in a gruesome accident last Christmas.

They had arrived at the hospital in similar shape except that she urgently needed a heart transplant and he already registered as a donor before his death.

Angela’s Christmas

I actually came upon this by mistake on Netflix but I thought it was worth mentioning. It’s an animation and is safe for children as well as grownups.

It’s the story of a little girl who goes to church on Christmas eve for the evening service. It’s a cold night and though her family doesn’t have enough winter clothes to even go to church with, she sees that baby Jesus is barely clothed so she ‘takes’ him home to get him warm.

She dodges neighbors, church members, and even law enforcement to get the baby home and warm. This wasn’t accepted by her family so they head back to church to return the baby doll but meet church members to whom the event came off as a miracle.

Angela taught the grownups to look beyond gifts and church services.

Rise of the Guardians

I saw this animation in my undergrad days and loved it so much that it was one of the animations I reviewed and analyzed for my thesis.

This movie featured all fairy tale characters known to kids, the tooth fairy, Santa, sandman, easter bunny, elves, and even pitch black who end up as the show’s villain.

As usual, it reinforced the belief kids have in fairy tale characters and how the existence of the characters depends on the children’s belief, and of course, good wins once again.

Home Alone

It won’t be a Christmas movie list if the all-time classic Home Alone isn’t mentioned.

I don’t know about you but growing up, I loved every season of the movie where the kid is forgotten at home and he outwits a bunch of thieves while his family is away.

This will be a good option for family movie time this Christmas.

Whatever you choose to do this Christmas, make sure you have fun, laugh, and live a little. I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year ahead.
